Melbourne to Brisbane — Panamax Class Vessel

The Challenge

Coastal shipping routes along Australia’s eastern seaboard are heavily influenced by the East Australian Current (EAC) — a powerful western boundary current that can significantly affect fuel consumption and voyage times. Traditional routing approaches do not account for the high-resolution variability of this current system.

The Approach

Ocean Intelligence applied its AI-powered route optimisation engine to analyse high-resolution ocean current forecasts along the Melbourne–Brisbane corridor. The model identified an optimised routing corridor that leveraged favourable current patterns and avoided adverse flows, without compromising safety or schedule.

The Results

The optimised route delivered significant and measurable improvements over the standard shipping lane. The green/pink route (OI-optimised) outperformed the standard black route across all key metrics.
